Rain Rain Go Away!

Today was the last day of school for the kiddos and they could not have been more excited!  For the past couple of years the moms in the cul-de-sac have come together and planned a little party.  Water guns, slip-and-slides, pizza and popsicles are the perfect way to start summer vacation.  But it was not to be this year!  

When the kiddos got off the bus they were greeted by a cold rain storm but they didn't let the rain stop them!!!  After a round of popsicles the kids made "boats" out of tin foil and raced them down the street.  While it was not the party that we moms had planned everyone was all smiles.  I love how all the kiddos just rolled with it and had a wonderful afternoon.  Rain and all!!!

Children's Book Give-A-Way

Without further ado I would like to announce my first blog give-a-way...I will be giving one lucky reader the first three books in Mary Litton's series The Catacombs Mysteries.  The Catacombs Mysteries is a faith based education series that is a fun and exciting way for kids to explore Bible stories and their meanings and application to our modern lives. This series truly makes the Bible come alive for children!

I am just so giddy to be hosting my first ever blog give-a-way!  I am so excited because I love giving gifts to friends and now I get to give something to a fellow lover of blogs.  Also I am so happy to give-a-way books that my kiddos and I love to read.  While most of you already know that ML is a dear friend, you might not know how much we all have loved reading ML's books.

I'm With The Author

If you have been reading this blog for a bit you know that I love books.  And even more you know that I am trying my hardest to trying pass this love of reading on to my three kiddos!  So I jumped on the chance to take B with me to a local author's book signing.  It was a great night; books and a little girl time!!!

Plus there was an added bonus: the author is my dear friend, ML!  I am so very happy for ML's third book to come out.  I know that she has worked so hard on her books and I just love that my kiddos enjoy her books so much.  My older two have loved ML's first two books and we are all giddy to start reading the third book in the series as part of our summer reading plan.  

Plus whenever asked I could honesty say that I was good friends with the honored guest of the night!!!

P.P.S.  Just a simple hint but my give-a-way might have to do with today's post.

Sunday Funday!

We had hoped to spend most of Sunday at the pool but unfortunately Mother Nature had other plans.  The weather forecast called for thunderstorms off and on all day.  So while the pool was not in the cards, a trip a local vineyard with friends was a great alternative!  

I was quite happy to sip on a wine-arita, chat with good friends and listen to live music while the kiddos happily played with their friends.  I know that it might not be Napa Valley but VA wine country is truly fun for the whole family.  Any place where adults and children can have a nice time is a big winner in my book!!!

Now I have to get myself in gear for the last week of school.  I might be the only one but I find the last week to be more stressful than the first!!!

How Did Scarlet Do It?

Summer has finally come to our neck of the woods, in a major way.  Not even June and we are in the middle of our first heatwave.  So you can imagine how upset I was when I released that our upstairs AC unit was not working!  It got even worse when I quickly found out that every HVAC company was booked up until next week.  Thank God our downstairs unit is still working or we would be moving into a hotel for the weekend.

All of the heat without AC got me thinking about Scarlet and "Gone With The Wind".  I mean how did anyone live below the Mason Dixon line during the summer, without AC or even a fan, while wearing a dress with so many layers?  I for one know that I could not be cooled simply by drinking a glass of sweet tea.

No Need To Be Smug Part 2

So do you ever have a great idea that you think will save you time and make you a "fun" mom?  I had one of those "great" ideas before it went down hill so fast that I had no idea what hit!  

This past week I had what seemed like a million errands to run and L had the pleasure of coming along for the ride.  I thought that it might make things better if he could bring a couple of his toy "Army Men" along for the trip.  I was feeling  a little smug about how well things were going.  That was until we got to the bank!

After waiting patiently in line at the bank, we finally made it up to the teller.  And before I could say a single thing, L slaps his army man on the counter and say "put your hands up!"  I just about died right there and then!!! 

Crab Cakes

Hubby's birthday was over the long weekend and I was more than happy to make whatever he wished for dinner.  For, at least, the last five years I have been making Hubby crab cakes for his birthday and this year was no different.  Simply crab cakes that highlight's the crab and Old Bay.  No more...no less!

Crab Cakes

1 pound crab meat
1 egg
2 tablespoons mayonnaise (really mayo, none of that fake stuff!)
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon Dijoin mustard
1 1/2 teaspoons Old Bay (and only Old bay will do!!!)
1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 cup Panko bread crumbs
the juice from half a lemon

In a large mixing bowl, combine all ingredients except for crab meat.

Gently fold in the crab meat, being careful not to break up the lumps. 

Shape into cakes. I use an ice cream scoop since I think it helps keep them all the same size.

Bake at 375°F degrees for 15-18 minutes or until evenly brown.

I know that there is nothing fancy about these crab cakes but I promise that their simplicity is what makes them special.
