The Great Outdoors

We live in a newer development which means we have nothing in our backyards but grass and maybe one tree.  This never really bothered me since the kids mostly use the backyard as a play-field.  That was until we had a deck built last spring and I suddenly realized how I was not happy with our lack of trees.

Not that I don't love my neighbors, because I do!  I just feel that no one should have to witness my children eating dinner.  Everyone know that boys can be messy eaters!!!

So after much research and nagging poor Hubby, we bought two Cryptomeria from a local garden center.   They are considered medium growth trees so each year we should see a difference in their width and height.  The trees might only be 5 feet across now but some day they could be as wide as 20 feet wide and 90 feet tall. (Hubby's note- 90 feet?!!! Pretty sure I didn't realize 90 feet was a possibility. Then again they will be someone else's problem by then.)  No one will be able to see how messy my boys are then!  I fear I might never be able to marry my sweet yet messy boys off!!!

The neighborhood boys loved watching the men plant the trees.  And I love that they tried to re-sod an area of our lawn that was damaged by the unreal rain we have had this Spring.  I just love it when people go above and beyond!!!

So far so good!  Let's pray that I don't develop a sudden case of black thumb!!!

  1. Those will be so nice. And don't even get me started on messy eaters. We have the opposite tree problem - taking out 29 next week... hopefully. Of course, most of them are little dinky trees that probably started out as a weed 10 years ago and they thought... that will be someone else's problem :-)

  2. What a perfect solution! Looks lovely - and I agree, a little separation is a good thing - what's that they say about fences making good neighbors? I would imagine trees make even better ones LOL

  3. The first thing I did when I moved into our house was plant a row of Norway spruce along the property line. I swear I'm friendly with the neighbors, but I like privacy, too! My favorite thing is stringing Christmas lights on them in December. You and your neighbors will enjoy the greenery, and you won't have to worry about them witnessing your messy eaters. However, you may have a bigger problem now... there's something about little boys and trees (if you know what I mean)... why go inside when you can go outside? :)

  4. The yard looks great! I don't think you had a fence back in the day, so it looks pretty different to me. I can't wait to see how fast the tree grows. We're looking at taking quite a few down in the next year and will need to buy some replacements.
